A Personal Jab
He couldn’t wait to dig into his hot nuggets. He was sitting in his car at the parking lot of a Chick-Fil-A when he finished all 30 of them. Then, he found the receipt in the bag. He almost choked when he read what was on the receipt. There was something under the “special instructions” section which he obviously wasn’t supposed to see. He realized that the little in-house joke of the Chick-Fil-A employees was really a personal jab at him. Needless to say, it made him furious. Did these people really think they could get away with something like this?
Daniel Graham, together with his girlfriend, drove to Flagstaff, Arizona to visit family. On their way home, they both realized that they hadn’t had anything to eat all day. Then, they saw a Chick-Fil-A. The pair barely discussed it when Daniel pulled into the parking lot. However, they both knew what they wanted to get at the fast food restaurant. What they didn’t know was that they were going to get something extra.
His girlfriend decided to wait in the car, while 22-year-old Daniel walked up to the counter to order a large fries and 30 chicken nuggets. He was told by his server Jordan that he would have to wait for a bit because they were busy. When Daniel heard some laughing in the back, he felt a bit miffed. Daniel thought, “If you’re so busy, how have you got the time to goof off?”
He Felt Uncomfortable
While Daniel wasn’t opposed to having a bit of fun in the workplace, he always felt uncomfortable when people who weren’t serious in their job were preparing his food. Once his order was ready, Daniel grabbed the bag and quickly made his way to his car. At this point, his stomach was really growling. He was so hungry that he didn’t even notice how the people inside Chick-Fil-A were staring at him when he was leaving.
A Little Paranoid
With all the giggling in the back of the restaurant, Daniel got a little paranoid that the employees messed with his food. He wondered if he was rude to them or if he had given them any reason to serve a spit sandwich. Brushing off the irrational worry, Daniel made his way back to the car and handed the food over to his girlfriend. He also didn’t mention his experience inside the restaurant. They both began eating, and didn’t really look inside the bag carefully.
Before long, the pair finished everything — all of the nuggets and fries. Daniel was so full he couldn’t eat another bite. Balling up the paper bag, he went to throw it in the trash can at the parking lot. However, he remembered that he needed the receipt. He had been keeping on top of his personal budgeting lately and was doing pretty well. Daniel opened up the bag to get the receipt but he also found something else.
Not The Receipt
Having been to Chick-Fil-A countless times before, David was quite familiar with how their receipts looked like. However, the one he found inside the bag was different. It seemed like internal communication which customers aren’t meant to see. When he read it, the more he was convinced that it had been put inside his bag by mistake. So what exactly did he find? Why did it get quite a reaction from him?
Couldn’t Believe It
After reading what was on the ticket, Daniel couldn’t believe that he was going to throw it away. He showed the ticket to his girlfriend just to make sure that he had read it correctly, and his girlfriend confirmed that he had. Apparently, the Chick-Fil-A employee had placed a note in the bag by accident. It should have never left the staff area as it was about him, their customer.
Singling Someone Out
“You should go back in there and have it out with them!” his girlfriend insisted. She was appalled that the server singled someone out like that, and even put the note in the bag with the customer’s food. However, Daniel didn’t want to see the rude employees again. Nevertheless, he still wanted to get his revenge, so he came up with another idea to get it without facing the employees that time.
After placing the note carefully on his lap and wiping the chicken grease off of his fingers, Daniel rolled up his sleeves and pulled out his cellphone from his pocket. He couldn’t help feeling offended and upset as he logged into his Twitter account. He knew that there was no way he was going to allow them to get away with this. Needless to say, he took to social media to get his revenge.
Teaching Them A Lesson
Daniel knew what he needed to do in order to teach the Chick-Fil-A employees a lesson. This thing was far from over. As a matter of fact, it was just the beginning. Fortunately, Daniel had quite a number of followers on Twitter. He intended to notify each and every one of them regarding his experience with the fast food restaurant employees. He shared a picture of the offensive receipt. However, he didn’t expect a response like this.
Daniel tweeted a photo of the receipt together with a picture of himself flipping off the camera. Aside from the rude hand gesture, he made sure to show off his knitted sweater. After several minutes of silence, the responses started to roll in. What was on the receipt that it sparked a really furious Tweetstorm? Well, it was definitely outrageous because there were many people who felt compelled to respond to the tweet.
In addition to posting the ticket on Twitter, Daniel also called out the restaurant for their unprofessional behavior. Daniel told the server Jordan his name, but they still decided to identify Daniel by their opinion of his fashion sense and wrote “ugly sweater” on the ticket. “It was NOT MY PLEASURE TO EAT CHIC-FIL-A TODAY,” Daniel tweeted as a reference to the trademark sign off of the chain, “my pleasure.” However, he didn’t expect that his Goodwill sweater would be a sensation online.
Daniel and his girlfriend never anticipated to get a response like this. Plenty of mixed feelings were shared about the incident, which ended up leaving the Twitterverse divided. There were users who complimented the sweater, but there were also some who agreed with the cashier, calling it ‘ugly’. Some users even criticized the size of the order that Daniel got. He quickly corrected them, and explained that the 30 pieces of nuggets were shared between him and his girlfriend.
Rallying Behind Him
Even though there were mixed responses and comments, many users felt Daniel’s reaction was totally justified. A lot of users agreed that the rude comment of the cashier was uncalled for and really unprofessional. Then, Twitter users started to rally behind Daniel, wanting to help with his plight to call out the Chick-Fil-A employees on a public platform. However, would he get justice and would he be able to teach employees a lesson?
The tweet got over 150,000 likes, 700 comments, and 17,000 retweets. “I’m not mad,” Daniel insisted as he eventually saw the funny side of things. “But I am sad and I will take reparations in free chicken sandwiches,” he said, hoping to get the manager’s attention. However, there were actually many comments that said Daniel was just making a big deal out of nothing. These commenters suggested that they had the right to call out Daniel’s clothing like that.
Providing good customer service should be one of the main aims of any business. However, the service that Daniel was provided left a lot to be desired. In fact, he was offended and saddened by it. He certainly didn’t appreciate the personal jab at his choice of clothing. However, Daniel had no time to make a complaint as he was too busy replying to questions and comments directed at his post.
So Many Questions
There were definitely a lot of questions and comments both from followers and strangers. However, most of them were not really about what had happened. Instead, they were snide remarks about Daniel’s order. Contrary to most responses, there were still some users who explained to Daniel that ‘ugly sweater’ isn’t actually an insult at all. One woman even posted a picture of her own ‘ugly sweater’, making Daniel laugh out loud.
A Crazy Coincidence
It was definitely a crazy coincidence. The photo showed a girl sporting the exact same sweater that Daniel wore. However, there was another notification that soon popped up, this time from Chick-Fil-A. Apologizing profusely for what had happened, the branch manager said that everything had been a misunderstanding. According to him, the receipt that Daniel got in his bag wasn’t supposed to be seen by the customer as it was for the cashier in calling out an order or name. It was a cheat-sheet for the staff so they could remember the customer easily. Apparently, in Daniel’s case, they though his sweater was easy to remember.
Ugly Is Fashionable
“They‘re not wrong though,” one commenter wrote after seeing Daniel’s disgruntled selfie. There were those who pointed out that such a fashionable sweater could not be insulted by the word “ugly”. “OK, but ‘ugly sweater’ is what cute sweaters like that are called, sir!” one fan of Daniel’s loud sense of style commented. Would you be offended if a server placed a note like that inside the bag with your food?
