On her way to work, Jaylesya saw a car in the corner of her eye. At first, she ignored it, kept her eyes on the path, and quickened her pace. She prayed that the driver was not going to bring her any trouble and simply pass her by. As the car approached, however, it honked at her! When she turned around to look at the vehicle, she saw that it was actually a police car. When the officer hopped out, she felt even more confused. What could the cop possibly want with someone like her? The truth will shock you…
He Had Been Looking For Her
Scott Bass is a police sergeant working for the Nash County Sheriff’s Office. He had been cruising around in the patrol car and surveying the road. He was searching for someone in particular and wondered if she was where he thought she would be. Eventually, he made his way to the Stone Gate Mobile Home Community. He figured that there was a good chance that he would find her there. His hunch turned out to be right because he soon saw the familiar figure on the road!
The Weather Was Bad That Day
At the time, Jaylesya Corbett was making her way to her Bojangles, her workplace. Unfortunately, the weather was awful with heavy rain and strong winds. She tried to use her umbrella to protect herself from the elements, but it flew out of her hands! Resigned, she sighed and tried to huddle so that she could stay as warm and dry as possible before carrying on. The rain stung, but she had no choice but to plod onwards. When the police officer honked at her, she felt even more resigned. What was it now?
Going About Her Normal Routine
She was exhausted as she stood there waiting. Even though she tried her best to stay out of the rain, her feet and shoes were both soaked. Her feet hurt thanks to blisters even though she was wearing the comfiest pair of sneakers that she had. Every single day, she would go to Bojangles no matter what the weather was like. She had no choice but to walk to work no matter how long the trip was. It is shocking to hear that a round trip goes for 12 miles! On that day, things changed when the cop stopped her.
He Asked Her To Get In
After looking around for a little while, Sgt. Bass spotted her at last. He honked to get her attention and motioned for Jaylesya to come closer. There was something that he had to tell her, and it was a big deal. She felt quite afraid when he rolled down the window and approached him because she had no other choice. What else could she do in that situation? It was impossible to ignore a cop, and it would have been useless for her to run. There were many things going through her head as she went up to him.
She Was Confused At First
Jaylesya felt nervous as she went up to the car that had “Shariff, Nash County” on its side. She had to muster up all the courage in her body as she approached the officer. Even though she had no idea what he was about to tell her, she tried to prepare herself for the worst. When he finally spoke, she could not believe what she was hearing! She was shocked by his words and could not process what he just told her. It did not take long before she finally realized what exactly was going on here.
No Use Putting Up A Fight
As soon as Sgt. Bass got her attention, he asked her to enter the vehicle. In the beginning, she protested. Ultimately, she gave up when he insisted and asked her to get in the car once more. He told her that she should not be out there, and she tried to reason with him. There was no time for her to waste since she had to go to work as soon as possible. After all, she needed the money to provide for her family. In the end, she knew that there was no use arguing with a man of authority.
Wondering About The Destination
Jaylesya was quiet as they drove down the roads. She still had no clue where he was planning to bring her. The entire time, she felt nervous and brought her hands up to her chest in anxiety. When she realized that she must have seen nervous, she put them on top of lap instead. What on earth was going on here anyway? Was he taking her in for questioning? Why did he not explain what was happening to her? The suspense was making her feel anxious. He kept his eyes on the road the entire time, however.
He Took Her To Her Workplace
It would be an understatement to say that she felt uncomfortable as this was going on. He might have been a cop, but she realized how dumb it was for her to simply do as he instructed. Perhaps she should not have done that and asked more questions before it was too late. Maybe she could still make a run for it. He might have been a cop, but she still did not know if she should trust him. Her thoughts of escape disappeared when they arrived at their destination. He brought her to her workplace!
Wanting To Help Her Out
The truth was that Sgt. Scott Bass noticed Jaylesya in her Bojangles uniform while he was driving to the Sheriff’s Office of Nash County. He felt sad when he realized that this woman had been trekking 12 miles on foot to reach work and then home every single day. This was the reason he wanted to drive her to Bojangles. It would have been cruel to let her walk such a long distance when the weather was like that.
He Came Up With A Plan
Sgt. Scott Bass kept dropping Jaylesya off at work when the weather was bad or when she did not mind it. On a normal day, it took her two hours each way to make her way to Bojangles on foot. It means that walking took up four hours of her day, so we bet that she appreciated his offers. The officer was so impressed with her determination to go to work and wanted to help her out some more. This was why he got in touch with the local Walmart and asked if they could offer her any help.
A Lovely Gift
Jaylesya wondered what he had to tell her. The officer told her that he needed to see her, so she felt a little nervous. Her first thought was that he was going to reprimand her even though she did not think that she did anything wrong. While she came up with theories, she spotted him. He asked her to come over, but she was still clueless at that point. All of a sudden, he pulled out a huge object from the car and handed it to her. He was giving her a new Schwinn Fairhaven Women’s Cruiser bike!
Act Of Kindness
“I wanted to help Jaylesya because she walks six miles to work every day regardless of the temperature, rain or shine, stands on her feet during her entire shift and walks six miles under the same conditions back to her home — and that is truly admirable. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know her and wanted somehow to lessen her burden of that 12-mile walk,” Sgt. Bass explained later on.
They Were Proud Of Him
CBS 17 posted a video on YouTube about this touching story. It has gained more than 6,000 views and hundreds of comments in only a span of several weeks. The Nash County Sheriff’s Office also took to Facebook to commemorate the kindness of Sgt. Scott Bass. As expected, the members of the community approved of the generosity he has shown Jaylesya! They take pride in having such a charitable neighbor.
Looking Out For Others
“I was shocked,” Jaylesya explained when asked about the great gift. She added, “I didn’t think it was real.” She could not help but feel grateful that she no longer needs to walk such a long distance to get to and from work. Her difficulties have been reduced, all thanks to the kindness of the people in the community! We like to think that most people would have the same thing that Sgt. Bass did.
