A back to the wall does not necessarily mean that there is nowhere else to go. It can mean that you are safe. When you do not have to keep looking behind your shoulder, you can focus on the threat coming from the front. Soldiers typically like to sit right in front of a wall for this reason.

Hospital Corners
Soldiers are big fans of cleanliness and this extends to the way they make their beds. Making “hospital corners” keeps the beds so neat that they all look identical. It seems like even beds have uniforms!
