It was obvious that the woman was offended. She even tried to speak to the manager, but they all laughed in her face. This was simply the cherry on top as she was already having a terrible day. She just wanted to enjoy her food without looking at something she deemed so unpleasant. In the end, she decided to escalate things. At the time, she had no idea that this was not going to work. As a matter of fact, it backfired instead. She really should have minded her own business and just ate her meal in silence.
It Only Got Worse After That
All her life, Luann Cofield has called Fayetteville, Georgia, her home. She could not help but notice that the town was degrading as of late. No matter where she looked, she would find evidence of this. While she loved her hometown, the future seemed grim for it. She started to feel pangs of hunger, so she went off to look for food. Annoyance filled her as she walked around town and saw things that did not sit right with her. It was a bad day for this woman, but things were about to get worse from that moment on.
She Was In A Bad Mood
In the end, she made up her mind to drop by the local McDonald’s. She hoped that a hot meal would improve her mood. Luann ordered a Big Mac meal, which came with fries and a soda. As she brought the burger up to her mouth, she began to notice something that soured her mood even further. She immediately put down the food on her tray and tried to see if she could speak to the manager.
Not What She Thought It Was
Once she entered the store, she noticed a pile of rags across a booth. It was not a nice sight, but she was too hungry to care at the time. However, she soon realized that it was not what it seemed. The truth was that it was not a bunch of rags but a man asleep on the bench! She wanted to know if he was a junkie or a drunk. At any rate, she was not going to take this lying down.
She Asked For The Manager
When the cashier noticed the customer walking to the counter, he braced himself. Luann demanded, “I want to talk to the manager!” He could tell that she was not joking, so he asked the manager for help. As soon as the higherup arrived, the customer then complained about the person sleeping on the bench. The manager stared at her as if he was planning what to tell her. She did not expect his response at all.
They Did Not Mind
The manager glanced at the man in the booth and told her, “Oh yeah, we know.” This took Luann by surprise. It did not feel like he was taking her seriously. You can even say that he just laughed in her face. As you can guess, it was frustrating. She took out her phone and took a photo that got even more attention than she thought it would. In the end, they took down her Facebook account because of it.
Posting It On Social Media
She did not hesitate to document the incident and post it on Facebook. Her goal was to show how she was treated in the store. She kept an eye on the post, hoping that her friends would back her up. It felt like the natural course of things. However, she turned out to be very wrong about that.
What She Had To Say
“Just another reason for me to leave Fayetteville!” she said, “I was in the McDonald’s in the middle of town, and I saw this guy sleeping in the booth!” She went on, “Their response was ‘Oh yeah, we know, hee hee. It’s OK.’ And I said, ‘Not really, but whatever.’” People started to give it their two cents.
They Were Furious For A Different Reason
Her post earned the attention of so many people. She could not help but smile, thinking that they were there to give her validation. However, she found out just how wrong she was. Instead of support, she got outraged. Thousands of comments expressed outrage, not at the manager but at her! They were mad when they heard about what she did. She could not understand why this was going on.
Looking At The Bigger Picture
In the comments, some folks identified the sleeping guy as Simon Childs. The 21-year-old man had been down on his lack in the past couple of months. He was a fry cook at the McDonald’s, which is the reason he slept there. It was not an issue for them because his awful luck resonated with the other employees.
He Was A Homeless Dad
At the time, Simon had been trying to get some sleep before starting his next shift. The new dad had to take on extra shifts to provide for his toddler. As you might have already guessed, Simon did not have a place to call him. He was stretched too thin. There was no way for the paycheck to cover rent. No one could believe that Luann would share a photo of him when he was at such a low point in his life.
It Hurt To See The Post
“It hurt me to see my picture up there,” Simon said when he was interviewed. He was already dealing with so many things. It did not help that he recently lost his mother as well. We are sure that he could have done without being shamed on the internet. The plot thickened when local news outlets got wind of the story. Both Luann and Simon got pushed into the spotlight. What happened after this?
She Deleted Her Facebook Account
By then, Luann had already been bashed a lot on social media. She could not take any more of it. She even ended up deleting her Facebook account and tried to put it at the back of her mind. On the other hand, Simon was busy with work. When the photo went viral, he found an unexpected sight at the store.
Getting A Lot Of Support
“I didn’t think the community would even care enough about me to do that, but they care,” he said with tears in his eyes. He saw piles of formula, diapers, and other supplies on the floor of the store. He got even more support after that. Some local chefs wanted to do something nice for him as well. This was only the beginning of his newfound luck! What else happened after that?
People Cared About Him
Xavier and Theo Thomas are the owners of a local restaurant called Fusion Chefs Eatery. They got wind of his plight, so they decided to help Simon however they could. They got in touch with him and said that he could use their car whenever he wanted to attend job interviews. We are glad to hear that they were not the only good Samaritans who stepped up to the plate.
Other People Offered Him A Hand
There was a barber who gave him a fresh haircut. They knew that this was going to improve his odds of landing a good job. Xavier said, “Simon’s story just touched our hearts.” It was good news for him as it did not take long before he found good job opportunities. Even so, the struggling dad was still homeless.
With The Help Of GoFundMe
Many locals even donated hotel stays so that they could find a safe place for the night. There was also another person who created a GoFundMe campaign for Simon. Donations started to pour in not long after he set it up. Simon was thankful for all of the blessings that he received. He promised that he would pay it forward once he was in a position to do so.
Time To Pay It Forward
“Everything I get, I want to work for it,” Simon said. He went on, “I actually want to use everything I’m getting from this and help other homeless people.” We are glad that things worked out in his favor in the end. But what happened to the lady who complained? How did she react to this turn of events?
Through All Of The Backlash
Luann got a lot of backlash for the spiteful Facebook post. On the bright side, Simon would not have received all the support if she had not done this in the first place. She had bad intentions when she made it, but it would take more than just deleting her Facebook profile to make it up to him.
When They Finally Met Again
She eventually met up with Simon. “I didn’t want to hurt him,” she explained in an interview outside the same store. When she learned about what he was going through, she felt bad. She went in to hug him as soon as her eyes landed on him. Luann told him, “I’m sorry. Because, you know, that horrified me. That breaks my heart for you.” However, did he find it in him to forgive her after what she did?
Looking At It In A Different Light
“I’m not homeless, not now, thanks to Luann,” Simon said, “I’m no longer sleeping in a McDonald’s, so that’s good. I feel great.” After that, he turned to her and shared, “I do want to thank you. Not for the post per se, but for helping me pick my life up off the ground.” What did she have to say about that?
All Is Well That Ends Well
Luann was asked whether she would react that way in a similar situation once more. In response, she said, “Absolutely not. And I would handle it differently. Maybe talk to somebody and see what the situation is.” And what about the GoFundMe campaign? It was able to raise $10,000! Despite everything, Simon did not have any plans to take advantage of the generosity of his community.
He Wants To Give Back
“I actually want to use everything I’m getting from this and help other homeless people,” he said when WSB-TV News interviewed him. A couple of weeks after the post went viral, he started to get more job offers. In the end, he accepted a new construction job. On the GoFundMe page, the latest update read, “Simon meets his new work team! Dressed for comfortable travel as they head out of town to the job site! Safe travels and good luck on your new adventure!” Despite this, netizens remained outraged by what happened.
She Could Have At Least Asked
“Luann Cofield was disgusted enough to expose Simon Childs on Facebook without his knowledge,” a netizen said, “…without even bothering to ask the McDonald’s staff why they were allowing him to sleep there.” Another comment read, “Sad that African American males can’t even rest between shifts at their place of employment at #McDonalds. If he reversed it, people would be outraged.”
The Reception Was Mostly Positive
Apart from a couple of angry users, the online reception to his story was mostly positive. People from different parts of the globe congratulated him on the new job. “Great story about how when the intent to shame goes the polar opposite and in a POSITIVE way!” a man said. A woman chimed in to say, “What she meant for evil, God meant for good. God bless you #SimonChilds and your baby!” No matter what everyone had to say, we are just glad that things worked out for all parties involved in the end. And that is really the only thing that matters in our opinion.
