Her second husband died in 1975. She went back to work after that. She was first a consulting editor at Viking Press and then an associate editor at Doubleday. Aside from this, she also got involved in cultural and architectural preservation work. Jackie was a part of these efforts back when she was the first lady too.

Her Failing Health
In late 1993, she fell from a horse. After that incident, her health started to go downhill. Subsequently, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. As of May 1994, it had already spread to her brain, spinal cord, and liver. Within the same month, she died in her sleep. She was 64 years old at the time.
