Paige’s career in gymnastics ended when she was just 12 years of age. There were two occasions when she fractured her kneecap. For someone so young and full of dreams, she was clearly devastated and mourned for around a week or two. After her mourning, she discussed with her parents what sport she should next focus on. Paige said, “Being an athlete was so important to my self-identity that even at that age, I knew I needed to find another sport quickly.”

There was another reason why Paige decided to quit her gymnastics training. Because of a rare scalp condition, she had no choice but to have a short bowl cut hairstyle. She was always mistaken as a boy. In an interview, Paige said, “I was this weird kid with a bunch of problems, and they all shunned me. I would sit down at a table, and every other kid would stand up and move. At recess, one of their favorite games was to throw rocks at me. It was like in a movie except that was my life.”
