Perhaps you have already noticed that dimes and quarters have rough edges while nickels and pennies do not. This is from the time when they stamped coins in different weights to indicate the value of the coin. Back then, some people shaved the edges of coins and melted them in order to make new coins. To stop this, ridges were added to coins using precious metals.
