He chose not to return, and his character was written off. Gardner, being killed off, was a big twist put his death caused viewers to “gasp.” Clearly, audiences were very sad to see this beloved character go.

He played Tuco Salamanca and made the character his own, turning Tuco into a psychotic live wire. But Cruz said that he actually asked to be written off the show because he felt physically too drained by the filming. He said that the twelve-to-fourteen-hour days on set were physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausting. Cruz said he was happy when his character was killed off because he struggled with the brutality role of Tuco.
