Kommando Spezialkräfte Marine
Kampfschwimmer (KSM) is Germany’s only special-purpose unit within the Navy. The unit was created in 1955 upon Germany joining NATO. The original unit took any man who did not have a Nazi past, but today the training is quite difficult. Trainees must run 5,000 meters in less than 24 minutes, swim 30 meters underwater without equipment and stay underwater without breathing for 60 seconds. Crazy enough, the physical aspect of the training is much easier than the psychological part.
