The Sioux

The mesmerizing artwork shows a group of Sioux, most of them on horseback, while rounding the bend of some rocky mountain trail. It looks like the group was taking their time. The painting was created during the time when the artist was most prolific. Meredith says, “1890 is when we start to see some of his very best paintings. He represented the Native Americans in a very peaceful, tranquil way.”

“You can see that in this painting, he didn’t really ever bring conflict into his work as some of the other artists of that time did, Charles Russell and Remington kind of would show the conflict with the Indians,” Meredith continued. The expert appraiser also added, “He really just wanted to show the Native Americans in their natural environment – without too many other things happening besides the landscape around them.”
