It seemed like the Alters were normal, middle-class citizens that had set up house in Cliff, New Mexico back in the ‘70s. Jerry loved traveling, adventure, and art, while Rita appeared to be a great person all round, showing kindness to everyone she met. A speech pathologist, Rita was really supportive when Jerry made a decision to retire at the age of 48. He was a music teacher, but he wanted to have the finer things in life.

Their neighbors knew Jerry and Rita, but they later said that the couple kept to themselves. No one really suspected that the pair was hiding a really big secret. Jerry passed away due to natural causes in 2011, and Rita followed 5 years later. The couple left behind two adult children, Barbara and Joseph. Ron Roseman had been left as their estate’s executor purely because he lived nearest to Cliff, New Mexico. If he hadn’t been the Alters’ executor, the couple’s crime may have never been exposed.
