Needless to say, McCarter did not file lawsuits against Schumacher, but the incident had an effect on him, as he did not try acting after The Lost Boys. He moved on to composition and music production after a few more roles, including appearances on TV shows including Route 66 and The Twilight Zone. He also dabbled in filmmaking and management in the 1990s, overseeing the career of his co-star Corey Haim.

McCarter finally moved to Tampa, Florida, after leaving Hollywood. He got a job in telecommunications and tried to balance work and being a single parent as best he could. Despite this, he nevertheless found time to attend conferences. Because of his approachable demeanor, he became a fan favorite. That makes his death in 2015 due to a liver disease all the more tragic. McCarter was 52 years old at the time.
