Baxter is said to have started her acting career in 1972, with a role in the CBS sitcom Bridget Loves Bernie. Despite the fact that the show was only one season long, she married David Birney, her co-star. The couple married in 1974 but filed for divorce in 1989. Baxter made appearances on episodes of The Young Lawyers, The Doris Day Show, and The Partridge Family during her early career. She is best known for her role in the NBC show Family Ties.

From 1982 to 1989, Elyse Keaton was featured on Baxter’s Family Ties. Baxter received two Primetime Emmy nominations for Nancy Lawrence Maitland’s role in Family before joining Family Ties. Baxter appeared in a slew of films, soap operas, sitcoms, and reality shows during the 1990s and 2000s, including One More Mountain, The Young and the Restless, Spin City, and Hell’s Kitchen. Baxter came out as a lesbian in 2009 and married Nancy Locke in 2013.
