For more than 30 years, Chief Brian Seastone investigated the De Kooning painting’s theft. He always felts in his heart that one day, he would crack the case. The painting was carefully examined soon afterward and they found the signature to be authentic. There was no question – it was the missing painting. However, the most surprising detail would have to be the fact that the Alters hung it behind their bedroom door away for over three decades. They likely did it to hide it from prying eyes. What’s more, new evidence suggests that the seemingly ordinary couple had in fact stolen the painting.
