While the Gem State’s degree and diploma set are lacking, its education standard could significantly improve. Idaho is among the bottom five states in this category. On Forbes’ ranking, none of Idaho’s top-rated schools made the top 400, though Brigham Young University – Idaho came close at No. 413. Idahoans, on the other hand, are keeping busy. In 2019, the national unemployment rate was just 2.9 percent, tied for the sixth-lowest in the nation with Massachusetts.

Indiana’s educational quality is excellent — it ranks seventh globally, but the state’s low educational attainment places it at the bottom of our ranking. Despite having five of the world’s top 150 colleges, including the University of Notre Dame, which Forbes ranked No. 18, Indiana has one of the country’s lowest higher education rates. Fortunately, the labor market is robust. Indiana’s unemployment rate is lower than the national average, with just 3.3 percent of the state’s total population unemployed in 2019.
