“Pipe Dream” To Reality
Wiest, much to Schumacher’s delight, was genuinely open to the proposal. The filmmaker’s “pipe dream” became a reality not long after. The actress volunteered to play Lucy, the Emerson boys’ mother. On The Lost Boys: A Retrospective, Schumacher said, “I couldn’t believe [it] when she said ‘Yes.’ [Wiest] is one of my favorite actresses.” Wiest was basically everyone’s ’80s wife, so the director wasn’t the only one who thought the casting was perfect.

The Lost Boys wasn’t Wiest’s only foray into the fantasy genre. She appeared in Edward Scissorhands three years later, in which she played a housewife who discovers a mysterious robotic man who lives in her neighborhood. Wiest, on the other hand, has since focused on prestige ventures and has received another Academy Award. She won an Academy Award for her role in Woody Allen’s film Bullets Over Broadway (1994).
