Janis Joplin, a legend who needs no introduction, was surely talented. She was among Woodstock’s headliners! She started playing on Saturday at 2 a.m., but she had the hearts and souls of people in her hand all the time. Woodstock was her biggest show since she went solo. If you did not know, she was once part of the psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, and according to Rolling Stone, their album Cheap Thrills is included in the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”

Initially, festivalgoers had to pay an admission fee, but the organizers soon decided not to receive payment when the masses kept coming. Happy people flooded the festival grounds, and the organizers realized it was impossible to limit the number of attendees. Fifty thousand people were expected to come, but nearly half a million came to Woodstock in the end. There were even reports that more people wanted to participate but were unable to get to the venue.
