Helping One Another
The Vietnam War was ongoing when the festival happened. The ‘flower child’ movement began to resist the war. To show peacefulness and solidarity, many individuals joined Woodstock. They were opposing the awful events which were happening. Henna tattoos, a popular body art at Woodstock, are done by the people in this photo. Originally, a flower child was synonymous with a hippie. “Flower kids” wore and gave flowers or items with floral themes. Those objects symbolize, according to them, peace, love, and universal belonging.

There was no Internet then, so everyone got their news from newspapers and magazines. People still wanted to know what was going on with the rest of the world even while they were at the festival, and this was the way they did it! A lot of paper was used, as you can see. A major task was to clean up after the event, and bulldozers’ help was required for the job.
